The 7th house lies directly opposite the ascendant, and that is exactly why it is the house of the other. Everyone you deal with face to face belongs here: spouse, business partner, lawyer, consultant and the rival who opposes you openly.
In traditional astrology it is the house of marriage. Modern readings widen this to "every relationship formed one to one and on equal terms". What these share is that the relationship is mutual and clearly defined.
Its axis with the ascendant is important: the 1st house describes how you act on your own, the 7th what happens when you stand face to face with someone. The two usually complete each other.
If the house is empty
If it is empty, its ruler and Venus are read together. An empty 7th house does not mean there will be no marriage.
